As a co-founder, vice-president, and board member
of the San Diego Chapter of the National Football Foundation and
College Hall of Fame, Walter Zable's life story is an inspiration
to young people growing up today. A graduate of the College of William
and Mary with a degree in Physics, Walter was subsequently awarded
a Master's Degree in physics and math from the University of Florida.
However, he not only excelled in his academic pursuits, but proved
to be a great athlete as well.
Accepted to the College of William and Mary on a football
scholarship, he earned an honorable mention as an All-American football
player. Playing as an end, he was a member of the 1st team All-South
Atlantic Conference. After graduating college, Walter played semi-pro
football for the Richmond Arrows. In 1962, he was elected to the
Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-American football team
where he was among the 11 best college players picked for the last
25 years. In 1969, he was elected to the William and Mary Sports
Hall of Fame.
In 1979, the San Diego Chapter of the National Football
Foundation College Hall of Fame gave Walter Zable the Distinguished
American Award, its highest honor. The following year, Walter received
the national organization's Gold Medal Award. This nationwide honor
is the NFF&CHF's highest award. In 1980, he was voted into the
College
Football Hall of Fame.
Walter Zable is a self-made multimillionaire, and is the head of
the nation's 200th largest electronics firm - Cubic
Corporation.
Cubic was formed in 1951 in San Diego, and is now the area's 6th
largest employer with 3500 employees and $400 million in sales.
He is very involved in the community with directorships in many
organizations and has been the recipient of many honors for achievement
throughout his illustrious career. Walter Zable is pleased to be
associated with the San Diego Chapter of the NFF&CHF and is
proud of the opportunities that it provides to aspiring student-athletes.
