- Everyone was welcomed by chair Jerry Ringer.
- Minutes of the February 16, 2001 meeting were reviewed and approved.
- The chapter 29th annual awards banquet on March 16 was reviewed
with the following results:
- Served 412 meals of which $1,000 of the cost was donated by
the High School Sports Association. We took in $13,543, with
chapters total expenses being $15,030, leaving a loss
of $1,487.
- Thanks were given to everyone with the chapter saying this
banquet was the biggest and best ever.
- A videotape of the banquet, along with a class photo and pictures
of the honorees receiving their trophies, will be mailed to
each winner.
- Board authorized a gift of $100 be sent to banquet MC Ron
Reina for his excellent work.
- Play It Smart Program - Steve Haynes was not present to report,
but football practice at Kearney High begins August 20, at which
time Jerry Ringer will contact U-T Sports Editor Jess Kearney regarding
a feature story on the program.
- 9th Grade Football - John Shacklett and chair Jerry reported.
- Chapter fund-raiser program has been moved back to July when
the football Season begins, and will then be talked about in
the news. Chargers have not returned solicitation letter with
Coach Rileys signature. Also, Junior Seaus schedule
will not allow him to be programs sponsor, but chapter
can use his name in it promotion, Bill Johnston told Jerry.
- August 13, 2001, chapters 25th Golf Tournament - Chair Bob
Babich was not present.
- Singing Hills CC is the place again.
- Spike Harvey said committee needs sponsors, shooting for 250
golfers. Suggested sponsor contacts were: Anthony Pico or Bob
Watson of the Viejas Indian Reservation, and Cliff LaChapa of
the Barona Indian Reservation.
- Also need to contact professional major league teams in football,
baseball, basketball and hockey for raffle prizes, along with
all NCAA colleges with attendance of 800 or more, who play football.
Carole Eigner and chair Jerry to do.
- Membership:
- 221 current members makes this chapter the third largest in
the Western Region behind Valley of the Sun with 300, and Northern
California. at 352. We are eighth nationally, with Universities
of Arkansas (632), Georgia (436) Nebraska (411) being the top
three. If California chapters were divided into Northern and
Southern, the Southern chapter would be ranked second nationally,
and first in the state with more than 550 members.
- Presidents meeting for 2001 has been moved to 2003.
- Chapter Web site - have added membership application and scholar-athlete
nomination forms.
- April National Board Meeting in New York - Walt Zable submitted
financials from the April meeting for the three months -ending March
31, 2001.
- NFL/NFF Coaches Clinic - John Shacklett
- No action, Jerry to follow up - best dates, June 15 and 16
here.
- Game of the Week - Jeff Abrams, Steve Brand. Will have schedule
in May and at that time will order shoulder pads from Steve Haynes.
- New Business:
- Sid Gillmans NFL/college coaching videos will be sent
out to local high school football coaches starting in May as
chapters gift to them.
- Junior Seau Tribute Dinner, June 30, 2001 - Invitations were
given out to attending board members.
- Mitch Burton would like to join our board, as he is a former
scholar/athlete honoree, former head football coach at Granite
Hills High, and now assistant at Grossmont College. He said
he likes what we do. Will vote on his nomination at next meeting.
He will replace Barry Humprey, who resigned when he moved out
of town.
- Walt Zable asked that we conduct a new membership open house.
Maybe tie it into an SDSU home football game.
