- Everyone was welcomed to the meeting by Jerry Ringer.
- Minutes from the last board meeting held on December 18, 2000
were reviewed and approved.
- As there was no treasurers report at the December 18
meeting, a verbal report was given by Allen C. Brown, the chapters
treasurer. He reported the chapters cash and asset position
is good compared to prior years. He further suggested that the
board consider what we should do with the excess cash that is
on hand.
As a not-for-profit organization, we possibly could be in violation
of rules or laws that govern the status that we should show
funds being used in a not-for-profit manner, such as scholarships.
Jerry said he would meet with Allen in a separate meeting to
review the matter and bring the matter back to the board at
a later date.
- The 29th annual awards banquet, March 16, 2001.
- Selection committee co-chair Jeff Abrams outlined how the
committee functions this year. He mentioned that several high
schools did not nominate a candidate, though U-T accounts said
these schools did have qualified candidates. He further suggested
that next year we adopt a better way of tracking schools who
do not nominate students. Jeff told of the calls, post-cards
and other reminders that were given to area high schools without
response via nominations. He told of calling Fallbrook High,
the CIF football champs in 2000, as they did not have one candidates
name submitted for consideration. Bill Christopher, who served
on the selection committee, seconded Jeff comments about no
response from coaches. Both Bill and Jeff pointed out the schools
know who we are and respect our organization. For some reason,
many coaches did not respond.
- Press kits with a photo and story on each winner will be sent
to the area news media on March 6. A press conference will be
held on March 7, to announce the winner of the Most Inspirational
Player award.
- Board assignments for the banquet were as follows:
Registration - Carole Eigner, Allen C. Brown and Bill
Christopher
Welcome committee - Mitch Burton
Signage - George Bralla
Trophies - Chet DeVore
Raffle - Brian Sexton
A.V. equipment - Don Whitt (Cubic).
- Head football coaches Ted Tollner of SDSU and Kevin McGarry of
USD discussed their recruiting efforts thus far. Coach Tollner said
his Aztec Team for 2001 looks like a good one. Coach McGarry said
he wants to wait to evaluate his team because his recruiting cycle
is not over yet.
- Play It Smart Program - Program chair Steve Haynes said program
is going well. Jerry Ringer reported National has sent chapter video
and brochures on the program.
- Will do publicity on the project when high school football
season begins in August, 2001.
- 9th Grade Football fund-raiser - Jerry and John Shacklett reported
that program is moving forward. Working with Chargers PR Bill Johnston
for spokesman.
- Golf Tournament set for August 13 at Singing Hills. Committee
chair Bob Babich was absent. Committee member Spike Harvey reported
that Bob continues to work with major sponsor who is in the health
care business.
- Membership - Jerry Ringer reported money was sent for 189 new
or renewed members to National this month. Asked that the membership
dues be retroactive to Dec. 29, 2000, so
chapter qualifies for Valley Foundation Scholarship. Communicated
in writing with National president Bob Casciola, who responded saying
organization is doing fine; no changes to the present organizational
structure required.
Bob also reported presidents meetings are every four years, not
alternating periods as in the past.
- April National board of directors meeting - Walter Zable said
he is planning to attend.
- NFL/NFF Coaches Clinic - John Shacklett reported he asked Bruce
Ward, president of the High Schools Sports Association, if he could
help put these clinics on in July.
- New Business - There was none.
Meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
