- Everyone was welcomed by Jerry Ringer.
- The October 19, 2000 board meeting minutes were reviewed and approved.
As requested, chapters web site is now on all minutes.
- Golf Tournament 2000 - Chair Bob Babich presided. He said he
is working to get a partner for our tournament. He is to receive
a proposal soon from the firm that is in the Health Care business
here. Bob said the prospective partner wants to join our chapter
and to only be recognized with his organizations logo or name
on the tee prize, along with that of the NFF.
Bobs partnership could possibly lead to help with other chapter
projects. He said when proposal is submitted early next year, he
will bring it to the board for review and comments.
Bob told the board he wants to fill two courses at next years
golf tournament.
- Final financial report of the August 14 event was
submitted by Treasurer Allen Brown via Jerry. The written financials
were distributed to each board member. Financials from chapter
tournaments in 1996, 97, 98 and 99 were also submitted as comparison
to the one in 2000.
2000 tournament had 198 golfers with an income, including the
raffle, of $38,793 with expenses of $30,228 for a net of $8,564.
Jerry pointed out that if we had sent National dues for the
198 players at $40 each, the tournament would have netted $618.
Bob suggested that we get a sponsor to cover certain high cost
items, such as the steak dinner for 224 at $5,313.48. There
were other high cost items on the expense side, such as tee
prizes at $6,596.99 and golf fees of $22,628.29 that could also
use some sponsorship.
The board agreed that we should not increase the entry fee for
players or downgrade this first class event. Jerry said it is
clear that if we are to make a profit for the chapter on the
event, and increase membership on a national basis, we need
to find sponsorship.
- Financial results from the four prior golf tournaments showed
a sizable profit for the chapter, while sending several thousand
dollars to National in the form of dues for new members.
Costs for putting the 2000 tournament on have gone way up and
are not expected to come down if the tournament continues to
operate as it has in the past.
- The board thanked Bob and his golf committee for their outstanding
work.
- Bob confirmed that he is working with Singing Hills Country
Club for our chapters 2001 tournament in August. It was
suggested by Jerry Ringer that maybe we should obtain a bid
from another local golf course as Singing Hills will have new
owners in 2001.
- Play It Smart Program
- Walt Zable told the board that this program is a
top priority at National. Ringer said he has suggested that
the U-T Sports Editor, Jess Kearney, consider doing a story
on our chapters part in this program. Kearney said he
would do a story based on the 2000 football seasons success
at the start of football in 2001.
- Jerry said Steve Haynes is doing a super job. Football team
and Kearny High, where program is ongoing, went from a team
with a GPA of 2.2 to 2.9. Goal is 3.0 in 2001. Jerry further
said program can expand to other area high schools, which Steve
could handle. Program could grow to include every area high
school.
- Ninth Grade Football - Jerry reported that Superintendent of Schools,
Alan Bersin, favorably accepted the chapters November 16 proposal
to raise money over the next five years to sponsor 9th grade football
and freshman sports. He will begin campaign in January 2001, with
fundraiser to take place in April for the 2001 football season.
- Chapters 2000-2001 selection committee - Jeff Abrams and
Steve Brand to chair committee meeting on January 9.
- Nomination forms are out to schools with more than
40 candidate nomination forms returned to chapters office.
- Dennis Ackerman of the CIF, will send reminders today to those
schools who have not responded. As Dennis cannot attend Jan.
9th meeting due to a conflict, Jerry asked John Shacklett to
join the committee as a nonvoting advisor. He agreed to sit
in.
- Willie Jones Most Inspirational - So far there are two players
nominated. USDs Kevin McGarry nominated one of his players,
who is a freshman and was burned in an auto accident. Jerry
advised that players need to be seniors. Jerry nominated Coach
Shacklett for his long time work and success with teaching high
school football players to be students first and good citizens
also.
- Distinguished American nominations went to Dean Spanos, with
a good deal of mixed thoughts. Jerry felt Spanos should continue
to help with chapters 9th grade football program, as the
Chargers started the project.
Spike Harvey felt Sid Gillman would be a good candidate. Nominations
remain open.
- Al Couppee Trophy for continued efforts to foster amateur
football in San Diego, should go to XTRAs sports talk
host John Cantera.
- Chairmans Trophy was not discussed.
- Selection Committee is in good order and Jeff Abrams sent special
letter to member Mike Riley, to attend the Jan. 9th meeting.
- NFL/NFF Coaches Clinic - Jerry said he is too busy to run this
July two-day event. John Shacklett asked for data on the event so
he could see if the Coaches Association can handle. Will follow
up in January with John.
- Membership - Chapter has 214 members.
- New Business -There was no new business.
Meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
