Minutes of August 1, 2000 Board Meeting

Present: Jeff Abrams, Bob Babich, Steve Brand, Chet DeVore, Carole Eigner, Brian Fogarty, Steve Haynes, Spike Harvey, Mark Osman, Jerry Ralph, Jerry Ringer, John Rozar, Brian Sexton

Guests: Don Whitt, and Mitch Meredith, Bob Weitzman from Football Darts

Absent: Dennis Ackerman, George Bralla, Allen Brown, George Brown, Bill Christopher, Barry Humphrey, Don Macek, Kevin McGarry, Dennis McKnight, Mike Riley, John Shacklett, Steve Smith, Ted Tollner, Walt Zable

  1. Everyone was welcomed by Jerry Ringer.

  2. Demo of chapter Web Site update was conducted by chapter’s volunteer consultant Don Whitt. Demo was received well. Board suggested adding CIF 2000 football schedule along with that of SDSU and USD.

  3. Received presentation by Football Darts who are looking for chapter recognition in exchange for their financial support, if the game sells. Board agreed to allow Football Darts to put on demo of game at the chapter’s golf tournament on August 14 at Singing Hills Country Club. Demo will be set up in the lounge starting at 10:30 a.m.

  4. Minutes from the June 29 meeting were approved. Action item – D. J. Busch nomination certificate as Western Region scholar-athlete for our chapter was completed and will be sent to his home.

    All other items will be covered in current meeting.

  5. Golf Tournament -August 14 , 2000 - Bob Babich reported:

    1. To date have 125 golfers, but most sign-ups come at last minute. Also have 36 $100 hole sponsors. Looking for 200 players on two courses.

    2. George Bralla is working with Bob and Carole Eigner to make sponsor signs.

    3. Have more than 100 raffle prizes donated so far. Looking for major auction items from Mike Garrett, USC AD.

    4. Will also send chapter’s footballs to 49ers for players to autograph.

    5. Bob has Hawaiian shirts with NFF logo as tee prizes. Cost $24; purchased 250.

    6. Board agreed we should sell prior years tee prizes at the tournament for $10 and $15 each.

    7. Assignments - Jeff Abrams, Allan Brown, Chet DeVore, Carole Eigner, Steve Haynes. Spike Harvey, Barry Humphreys, Jerry Ringer ,Brian Sexton, and Steve Smith will work tournament.
  1. All other items will be covered in current meeting. Jerry reported that Steve Stout, representing Miami University of Ohio, is interested in purchasing 17 of Sid Gillman’s playbooks for $225 each. Books will be placed in the school’s coaches museum. Stout found our offer on EBay internet. Sid’s coaches videotapes are not doing well on internet, so Jerry will change media to coaches magazine or periodicals.

  2. Board voted to have chapter night at a SDSU football game (Illinois vs. SDSU on September 9). Received proposal from SDSU where chapter can purchase $27 loge end zone tickets for $17 each, with food and beverage vouchers good at anyplace in stadium.

  3. NFL will honor Sid Gillman at golf tournament and dinner on Aug. 27. Board agreed to purchase half-page ad in program saluting Sid, for $200. Jerry to write ad.

  4. City Schools Freshman Football - Chapter has agreed to raise $120,000 starting in 2001 to support the need for 9th grade football and girls volleyball. City Schools’ administration is making it difficult to get the job done through their need to control the campaign. Chargers have already donated $250,000 to the cause.

  5. Jerry reported that our chapter sold 258 game tickets worth $10,300 for the NFF Aug. 17, 2000 Kick-Off Classic at Giant Stadium. Jerry reported when he called National on August 1 to find out why the seats were not in the same group or section, NFF president Bob Casciola hung the phone up on Jerry.

    On August 2, Jerry called Casciola back to find out why he hung the phone up on him. Bob said he didn’t like being questioned about seat locations. Jerry said Casciola apologized many times and told Jerry he regretted the incident.

  6. Game of the Week – Dr. Jeff Abrams reported all 12 games this year are covered. Jerry said he has MVP patches for 12 games through 2003 season, as well as shoulder pads.

  7. New Business:

    1. Brian Fogarty reported that Oct. 6 was the date for the dedication of the Chet and Marguerite Pagni Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony. Carole Eigner said chapter would send invitation out for USD to chapter members.

    2. Steve Haynes reported that NFF’s Play it Smart project director Jim Presbrey has asked Steve to be San Diego’s academic coach for the campaign sponsored by the NFL. Board agreed Steve would do an excellent job and the chapter can gain a good deal of publicity with the project.

    There was no further new business.
