July 1, 1999

Present: Jeff Abrams, Dennis Ackerman, Bob Babich, Allen C. Brown, Bill Christopher, Chet DeVore, Carole Eigner, Brian Fogarty, Spike Harvey, Jerry Ringer, John Rozar, Steve Smith, Walt Zable and guest, Steve Haines.

Absent: Andy Anderson, Steve Brand, George Brown, Sid Gillman, Barry Humphrey, Don Macek, Kevin McGarry, Dennis McKnight, Mark Osman, Jerry Ralph, Brian Sexton, Ted Tollner.

1) Chairman Jerry Ringer welcomed everyone and thanked them all for attending.

2) Jerry then reviewed the minutes from the May 12, 1999 meeting stating that item 2b, football camp fund-raiser, is still open and no action has been taken.

Item 4. Received banquet money from San Diego High School and Grossmont College.

Item 8. This was a follow up to a special chapter-hosted reception for the gathering of all former Don Coryell football players, held on June 29, 1999. The cost to the chapter was $300 for pizza and drinks.

Jim Herrick of SDSU, said school would give two tickets to each board member for the October 9, 1999 homecoming game at Qualcom Stadium where Don Coryell will be honored.

Item 10b. Jeff Abrams reported that he has asked Mike Riley to join our chapter’s board. No response from him yet.

Item 11. Jeff Abrams will meet with the selection committee in June to review the selection process. To date, have not met.

3) August 16, 1999 the chapter golf tournament was reviewed by chair Bob Babich.

a) Invitations have been sent. A second “reminder” invitation will be mailed by July 15, 1999. To date, we have 12 players signed up and one hole sponsor. Bob said he is working on obtaining more sponsors.

b) Ron Phillips of the Hall of Champions would not let the chapter mail out invitations based on policy against such mailings. Chet DeVore said he would check this out and follow-up.

c) Steve Smith is working on the tee prizes. Jerry said he contacted Hall of Famer Bernie Kish for the price of their golf shirts as possible tee prizes. Have not heard back from Bernie or the Hall yet.

d) Jerry reported handing out invitations at the June 24, 1999 coaches association meeting and at the June 29, 1999 Don Coryell function.

e) Jerry took the action to contact Ron Reina to see if he will M.C. the tournament dinner. We will also attempt to obtain Chicago Bear tickets for the October 17, 1999 game, to go with the Notre Dame - USC auction package.

f) Carole reported that Barron Hilton again provided hotel accommodations to the chapter for three nights and four days to go with the Notre Dame - USC auction package.

4) MVP Game of the Week

a) Letterman jacket patches through the year 2005 have been ordered for the 20 players each year who will win the MVP award. The patches will be in this month.

b) Bob introduced Steve Haines from the Athletes for Action Organization who will now be the supplier of shoulder pads for the schools Game of the Week. The price will be approximately $50 per set. Board members Bill Christopher and Brian Fogarty will select the type of pads and the manufacturer.

Guest Steve Haines asked to become a part of our board. We will invite him to our meetings. Steve’s phone number: (619) 583-4955.

5) October 9, 1999 is SDSU’s night to honor Don Coryell. The board is invited to this game as guests of the school.

6) Jerry reported that the Western Regional Coordinator Bob Keropian, turned down the chapter’s offer to cover all of the costs of producing the region’s newsletter for two years. The chapter turned in five stories to Keropian for the July newsletter, including one on our golf tournament.

Jerry said the chapter will take its 25 percent rebate from the membership before submitting to National. In 1998, National took almost one year to pay the chapter.

7) Walt Zable gave a report from National saying the next board meeting is August 13, 1999 at the Hall of Fame.

8) New Business:

a) Jerry said he was going to Don Coryell’s Hall of Fame enshrinement on August 13, 1999.

b) The awards banquet’s new home is the Doubletree Hotel in Mission Valley. They have new banquet facilities and free parking and it’s freeway close. Carole and Jerry will work out the details.

c) The board again agreed to spend $500 for the Leon Bender memorial at Santana High. Jerry read the words that the students wrote for the plaque.

d) Jerry asked John Rozar to review chapter’s Web Site.

9) Meeting adjourned at 1:05 p.m. in time for the board members to make the Padre baseball game at 2:05 p.m.
