|
Present: Jeff Abrams, Dennis Ackerman, Bob Babich, George Bralla, Allen Brown, Bill Christopher, Chet DeVore, Brian Fogarty, Spike Harvey, Don Macek, Mark Osman, Jerry Ringer, Steve Smith, Walt Zable. Guests, Jerry Ralph, King Deutsch. Absent: Andy Anderson, Steve Brand, Art Brandman, George Brown, Dan Dole, Sid Gillman, Barry Humphrey, Kevin McGarry, Dennis McKnight, Brian Sexton, Ted Tollner. 1) Jerry Ringer welcomed everyone and reviewed the minutes from the July 15 board meeting. The minutes were approved.
Bob ended his report by reviewing everyone’s assignment at the golf tournament. Jerry asked Bob if the guarantee of 160 golfers and 180 dinners was too high and suggested that perhaps it was a good idea to cut 10% off our guarantees. Bob advised that we keep the guarantees as they are. 3) The MVP program was reviewed by chair Jeff Abrams. He reviewed the program saying that the Seau Foundation would not take part in this year’s program as previously reported. The chapter will donate a pair of shoulder pads to each school who plays in the game-of-the- week plus players lettermen patches. It was decided not to invite MVP winners to our awards banquet. Jeff needs to write a script and procedure document for participating board members. He said he would do that as soon as Steve Brand returned from vacation. 4) How to Watch Football - Bill Christopher and Brian Forgerty to teach. Bill turned in his lesson plan. Jerry will make a video and other visual aids. Still set for Sept. 10. 5) Chet DeVore was asked to review the selection policy used by the Western Region Coordinator to select the area winner for national recognition. Chet will report back at next meeting. In a nut shell, the coordinator bases his selection on a 40, 40, 20 plan; 40 points for academics, 40 for football ability and 20 for citizenship. He bases his academics by reviewing the candidates high school transcripts and the person with the most As in a college preparatory course study gets the most points. He does not take weighted grades into consideration. 6) Walt Zable did not have a report from National, but said he would at the next meeting, since there was a board meeting coming up. The board asked him to give the honors court a fact sheet flyer and newspaper clipping on Don Coryell for election into the Hall of Fame. This same flyer will be mailed to chapter members throughout the Western Region in September or October. Jerry will accomplish. 7) Old Business - the CIF gave Walt Zable a framed certificate of appreciation for the work he has done. Jerry reported there would be an August newsletter that would cover the golf tournament. He also said the chapter has its license for a Web Site and that the project is moving ahead. Jerry and Bob talked about the new NCAA regulation prohibiting universities from donating items to our golf tournament. Jerry and Bob said that next year they will clear the chapter’s letter of solicitation with the NCAA. Walt Zable said he would get some additional clarification from National. Jerry said he would give Walt a copy of a rejection letter the chapter received based on this new ruling. Chet DeVore asked that the chapter office send a copy of the 1997 nomination form to each member of the selection committee for their review ASAP. Brian Fogarty reported that Jeff Dougherty, our university scholar-athlete from USD, signed a baseball contract with the Angels. Jerry Ralph, head football coach at Santana High, was elected to the board of directors. Meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m. |
